California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is airing a new ad in Florida on July 4th taking shots at Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and the Florida GOP for attacking Floridians’ freedom and urging fed up citizens to move to California.
“It’s Independence Day. Let’s talk about what’s going on in America. Freedom, it’s under attack in your state. Republican leaders, they’re banning books, making it harder to vote, restricting speech in classrooms, even criminalizing women and doctors,” Newsom says in the ad.
“I urge all of you who live in Florida to join the fight, or join us in California, where we still believe in freedom, freedom of speech, freedom to choose, freedom from hate and the freedom to love,” Newsom added. “Don’t let them take your freedom.”
DeSantis is a top candidate for the GOP nomination for president in 2024. Newsom has said he has no interest in running for national office, though this ad might suggest otherwise.
He told CNN that the ad is the start of much more to come.
“Things have changed, rules of engagement have to change,” Newsom said. “You’ve got to take the fight to them.”
