Former US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley praised Donald Trump for his “strong” speech at the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) on Sunday, weeks after she distanced herself from him.
“Strong speech by President Trump about the winning policies of his administration and what the party needs to unite behind moving forward,” Haley wrote on Twitter. “The liberal media wants a GOP civil war. Not gonna happen.”
Haley, a potential candidate for the Republican Party nomination in 2024, is trying to patch things up after she publicly tried to distance herself from Trump earlier this month in a Politico interview.
“We need to acknowledge he let us down,” she told Politico. “He went down a path he shouldn’t have, and we shouldn’t have followed him, and we shouldn’t have listened to him. And we can’t let that ever happen again.”
“I think he’s going to find himself further and further isolated,” she said of Donald Trump. “I think his business is suffering at this point. I think he’s lost any sort of political viability he was going to have. I think he’s lost his social media, which meant the world to him.”
Since the piece was published, Trump has refused to meet Haley which led her to write a piece in the Wall Street Journal blaming the media for the Republican Party identity crisis.
“The media playbook starts with the demand that everyone pick sides about Donald Trump – either love or hate everything about him,” she wrote. “The moment anyone on the right offers the slightest criticism of the 45th president, the media goes berserk: Republicans are trying to have it both ways!”
“It’s a calculated strategy to pit conservatives against one another,” Haley continued. “It’s also a ridiculous false choice. Real life is never that simple. Someone can do both good and bad things.”
“People feel strongly about Mr. Trump, but we can acknowledge reality,” she said. “People on the right can find fault with Trump actions, including on Jan. 6. Right or left, when people make these distinctions, they’re not trying to have it both ways. They’re using their brains.”
