The North Carolina Republican Party voted to censure Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C) for supporting LGBTQ+ rights, gun control policies and breaking with his party on immigration issues.
Tillis has a history of working across the aisle on several issues. Last year he was a part of a bipartisan group of Senators who pushed to codify same-sex and interracial marriage, with the Respect For Marriage Act, according to CNN.
The senator also angered Republicans in his home state by supporting a bill to provide funds for red flag laws and for breaking with Donald Trump’s hardline immigration stance.
A two-thirds majority of the North Carolina GOP 1,801 voting delegates voted Saturday to formally censure Tillis at the party’s annual convention in Greensboro, the Associated Press reported.
