North Carolina Republican Party votes unanimously to censure Sen. Richard Burr for his vote to convict Trump.

The North Carolina Republican Party’s central committee voted unanimously on Monday to censure GOP Sen. Richard Burr for his vote to convict Donald Trump in the impeachment trial.

“Tonight, the North Carolina Republican Party Central Committee (NCGOP) voted unanimously to censure Senator Richard Burr for his vote to convict former President Trump in the impeachment trial which he declared to be unconstitutional,” the committee said in a statement. “The Democrat-led attempt to impeach a former President lies outside the United States Constitution.”

“Now that the Senate has voted to acquit President Trump, we hope that Democrats will set aside their divisive partisan agenda and focus on the American priorities of tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, safely reopening schools and restarting the economy,” they added.

Burr who is retiring, was one of seven Republican senators to vote to convict Donald Trump on the charge if inciting an insurrection.

“It is truly a sad day for North Carolina Republicans,” Burr said in response to the censure. “My party’s leadership has chosen loyalty to one man over the core principles of the Republican Party and the founders of our great nation.”

Burr is the latest Republican senator to face backlash for his his vote. Louisiana Republican Party voted to censure Sen. Bill Cassidy hours after his vote to convict. Several GOP counties in Pennsylvania voted to censure Pat Toomey and Republicans in Utah have floated the idea of censuring Sen. Mitt Romney.
