New York Attorney General Letitia James is preparing to seize Donald Trump’s properties if the former president fails to pay the $464M bond in his New York civil fraud case by the March 25th deadline.
According to Bloomberg, James’ office registered the judgement in Westchester County just outside Manhattan, a sign that Trump’s properties in the area– Trump National Golf Club Westchester and the mostly undeveloped 212-acre Seven Springs estate– are at risk.
The outlet noted however that the registration in Westchester County doesn’t automatically mean James will attempt to seize the properties, it also makes it easier for the AG to secure liens on two of Trump’s most valuable properties if she decides to do so.
Last month, Judge Arthur Engoron ordered Trump to pay nearly $355 million in penalties in the civil fraud case.
Trump is appealing the decision, but must put up the bond in order to have his appeal go forward.
Trump’s lawyers said in a court filing earlier this week that he is unable to secure the full bond amount, which one insurance broker called “a practical impossibility.” The former president’s attorneys also told the court that underwriters are seeking cash to back the bond, not properties.
Trump has previously said he doesn’t have enough cash to cover the bond and complained that he might have to sell some of his properties at cheap “fire sale” prices to pay it.
