A new poll out on Friday revealed who voters believe should be held accountable for the Signal war chat leak.
Earlier this week, Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg, reported that he was accidentally added to a group chat about bombing Houthi targets in Yemen by Trump’s National Security Advisor (NSA) Mike Waltz.Â
Goldberg subsequently published full texts of the chat showing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth sharing sensitive information, including timings for airstrikes against the Houthis before they began.
Donald Trump has rallied behind both Hegseth and Waltz, but a new poll by J.L. Partners for DailyMail.com revealed that Republican voters believe Hegseth should resign over the national security leak.
38 percent of Republicans said Hegseth should go, with only 33 percent saying he should stay in the job. Meanwhile, 33 percent of Trump voters believe Waltz should resign and 32 percent say he should stay on as NSA.
The result is consistent with the trend in the overall poll showing that 54 percent of voters, including 54% of Independents, saying Hegseth should resign, while 22 percent saying he should remain as Pentagon chief, and 24 percent were not sure.
Meanwhile, 47 percent of voters in the poll said Waltz should go and 21 percent believe he should stay.
Trump backed Hegseth on Wednesday, telling reporters, “Hegseth is doing a great job, he had nothing to do with this.”
The president also called Waltz a “good man” who has “learned a lesson.”
