A polling firm has shut down after admitting that its data on races for governor of Wisconsin and mayor of Los Angeles were fake, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Median Strategies had released a poll showing Democratic socialist Francesca Hong defeating Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley in a landslide in the Wisconsin Democratic gubernatorial primary.

The poll had Hong up 23 points over Crowley. On election night, Crowley narrowly defeated Hong by less than a point.

“We got Wisconsin wrong- and by quite a margin too,” the firm posted on social media after Hong’s defeat.

The day after that post, Median Strategies released a poll showing incumbent Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass (D) defeating her progressive opponent Nithya Raman by 12 points in November.

Median Strategies claimed that the poll sampled more than 500 Los Angeles voters between July 30 and August 5, and had a 4.1 percent margin of error.

In a since-deleted post, Bass celebrated that poll on Twitter, writing, “Doing the work, showing up, and gaining momentum. Let’s do this, LA!”

But the company admitted the polls were completely fabricated and part of a ruse to expose the polling industry.

“Median Strategies was created as a short-term social experiment to examine how purported polling information could enter and spread through the political information ecosystem without independent verification,” the company told the LA Times. “We are not seeking publicity or attribution for the individuals involved and are declining interviews.”

The company also announced they are shutting down operations.

“Median Strategies has concluded its polling project and will not publish additional polls,” they said in a statement. “All previously published polling releases have been withdrawn and should not be cited or treated as genuine polling data.”
