Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo took a shot at his former boss, Donald Trump after he announced his 2024 presidential bid on Tuesday.
“We need more seriousness, less noise, and leaders who are looking forward, not staring in the rearview mirror claiming victimhood,” Pompeo wrote on Twitter Wednesday morning.
Pompeo did not identify Trump by name but his comment came hours after the former president called himself a “victim,” twice during his announcement speech on Tuesday night.
“I’m a victim,” Trump said. “I will tell you, I’m a victim. Think of it.”
Pompeo is one of several allies of the former president to turn on him after Republicans poor showing in the midterms, which they blamed on Trump.
Additionally, Pompeo may be attacking Trump because he is considering going up against him in the Republican primary. He told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt that Trump’s announcement will not impact his own decision on whether to run or not.
“We’re trying to think our way through, figuring out what’s next for us,” Pompeo said. What happens today or tomorrow, what some other person decides, won’t have any impact on that.”
Pompeo is also running digital ads in key primary states of Iowa, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, according to Insider.
