The Kremlin dismissed Donald Trump’s criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin as “emotional overload” on Monday.
On Sunday, Trump said he was considering new sanctions against Russia and called Putin “absolutely CRAZY!” for “needlessly killing a lot of people” after Russia launched deadly drone and missile attacks on Ukraine over the weekend.
“I’ve always had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin of Russia, but something has happened to him,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He has gone absolutely CRAZY! He is needlessly killing a lot of people, and I’m not just talking about soldiers. Missiles and drones are being shot into Cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever.”
Asked about Trump’s comments, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismiss the US president’s remarks as “emotional overload.”
“We are really grateful to the Americans and to President Trump personally for their assistance in organizing and launching this negotiation process,” Peskov said, according to Reuters.
“This is a very crucial moment, which is associated, of course, with the emotional overload of everyone absolutely and with emotional reactions,” he added.
Peskov’s comments come as Russia launched a record number of drones and missiles at Ukraine overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on X Monday.
Sunday night’s bombardment included 355 drones which is the biggest drone attack on Ukraine since the war begun in 2022, according to the Associated Press. That follows attacks on Friday and Saturday. Saturday’s attack included 298 drones and 69 missiles.
According to Ukrainian officials, 12 civilians were killed in Saturday’s attack, including three children from the same family in the Zhytomyr region, west of Kyiv. Friday’s wave of Russian bombardment killed at least 13 people in Ukraine.
Peskov said on Monday that the attacks were “retaliatory strikes” for Ukraine targeting civilian infrastructure, according to Bloomberg. Ukraine targeted central Russia with drones last week, a departure from earlier attacks that typically occurred overnight, the outlet noted.
