Rare deep sea fish washed ashore in California.

A rare deep-sea fish was spotted in Newport Beach, California, last week

Ben Estes spotted the fish while strolling along the beach at Crystal Cove State Park and alerted state park rangers and lifeguards on Friday.

The fish was later identified as a deep sea Pacific footballfish, one of 300 species of anglerfish usually found at depths greater than 3,000 ft below the surface.

The fish is currently in the custody of the California Department of Fish & Wildlife, according to The Hill.

“Though the fish itself is not rare, it is extremely rare to see one this intact along a beach in southern CA,” Davey’s Locker Sportfishing & Whale Watching wrote on Facebook Friday
