READ: Jack Smith’s report in Trump’s Jan. 6 case.

Special counsel Jack Smith targeted in Christmas Day 'swatting' incident.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has publicly released special counsel Jack Smith’s report following his investigation into Donald Trump and his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election after his loss.

Trump was accused of pressuring state and local officials to reverse the 2020 election results and seeking to exploit the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021 based on “demonstrably and, in many cases, obviously false” claims about election fraud.

Smith argued that evidence against Trump was “sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction,” if the case has gone to trial. Smith requested to dismiss the case following Trump’s election based on Justice Department policy that prohibits prosecuting a sitting president.

“The department’s view that the constitution prohibits the continued indictment and prosecution of a president is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged,” Smith wrote.

Trump lashed out at Smith in a post on his social media app Truth Social, calling him a “lamebrain prosecutor” and “deranged.”
