A record 61,000 children were infected with the coronavirus last week according to the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association.
Since the start of the pandemic, 853,635 children have been diagnosed with the coronavirus. That’s roughly 11.1 percent of the total number of cases in the country. The AAP believes that the true number of COVID infection in children is higher since symptoms are usually milder in children so they may not always get tested.
Dr. Sally Goza, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics said these numbers are a “stark reminder of the impact this pandemic is having on everyone — including our children and adolescents.”
Just last month, Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, North and South Dakota, Kentucky, Michigan and Wisconsin all reported an increase of 25% or more in pediatric COVID case.
“It just keeps going from horrible to even worse,” pediatric infections disease specialist in Wisconsin Dr. Greg Demuri said. “There doesn’t seem to be any end in sight.”
