Embattled GOP congressman George Santos (NY), who lied about his mother’s ties to 9/11, is reportedly bringing a 9/11 first responder to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union on Tuesday.
According to The New York Times, Santos invited former volunteer firefighter Michael Weinstock who did rescue work after the 9/11 attack as his guest to the State of the Union.
Weinstock previously ran as a Democrat for the New York third district seat which Santos currently represents in Congress. He told the Times that he accepted Santos’ invitation to the State of the Union because he wants to raise awareness about his chronic nerve disorder which he says is linked to pollutants he inhaled during rescue efforts on 9/11.
Weinstock said he was “cautiously optimistic that I’ll be able to stay focused enough on the issue of 9/11 responders receiving the health care that they need without being sullied by George Santos.”
Santos has been facing calls to resign from Congress for lying about his personal and professional life, including claiming on his campaign website that his mother was “in her office in the South Tower on September 11, 2001, when the horrific events of that day unfolded.” Santos said she survived the attack “but she passed away a few years later when she lost her battle to cancer.”
However, immigration records obtained by The Forward show that his mother wasn’t even in the US at the time of the attacks.
