Former Republican congressman and New York gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin compared Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny to Donald Trump on Friday after news broke of the Kremlin critic’s death in prison.
“As the world reflects on the murder of Alexei Navalny at the hands of Putin, it’s worth remembering that Democrats are actively doing Biden’s bidding as they also try to imprison his chief political opponent, Donald Trump, remove him from the ballot, and ensure he dies in prison,” Zeldin wrote on X/Twitter.
Navalny was an anti-corruption crusader who had been a thorn in the side of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He survived an assassination attempt in 2020 when he was poisoned with a Soviet-era nerve agent, Novichok, but returned to Russia a year later where he was quickly imprisoned.
Navalny was serving a combined 30 ½-year jail sentence when he died.
Trump, meanwhile remains free at his private resort in Florida despite being indicted by a grand jury four times and facing 91 felony charges related to his attempts to overturn the results of a free and fair election so he could remain in power and paying hush money to a porn star.
He is the leading candidate for the Republican nomination for president and has vowed to weaponize his justice department against his opponents if he wins the presidency.
