Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R) said Donald Trump’s third bid for the White House is the “worst scenario’ for Republicans as the former president continues to get backlash for Republicans’ poor midterm performance.
“That’s really the worst scenario,” Hutchinson said in an interview with the Associated Press about a rematch between Trump and President Biden. “That’s almost the scenario that Biden wishes for. And that’s probably how he got elected the first time. It became, you know, a binary choice for the American people between the challenges that we saw in the Trump presidency, particularly the closing days, versus Biden, who he made it that choice.”
Notably, Hutchinson did not rule out supporting Trump if he becomes the Republican Party nominee for president in 2024.
Trump was the first major candidate to announce he is running for the White House in 2024 last month. Hutchinson is also considering a run but told AP he will make a decision next year.
Hutchinson has been calling for the Republican the party to move on from Trump, especially in the party’s poor performance in the midterm elections last month. Some Republicans blamed the former president because several of the candidates he endorsed lost in the general election.
