Republican lawmaker admits prices are increasing but says it is ‘for the good of the country’

Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) said on Saturday that rising prices is actually a good thing for the country.

Prices of imported goods are starting to rise as consumers begin to see the effects of Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Trump’s sweeping tariffs went into effect on Thursday just after midnight ET. Most imports into the United States will now face a baseline 10% tariff, with the overall average effective tariff rate rising to more than 17% — the highest since 1935, during the Great Depression, according to the nonpartisan Yale Budget Lab think tank.

A recent Fox News poll shows Trump underwater with voters for his handling of the economy, 44% approve and 55% disapprove .

Asked about Trump’s poor polling Norman told Fox host Jon Scott that high prices are for the good of the country.

“I think a lot of people are seeing higher prices,” Norman said. “Our family’s in the construction business, and we get a lot of our timber from Canada and other countries. Yes, it’s higher. Steel prices are up, but it’s for the good of the country.”

“Should we expect high prices for a short time? Yes,” he continued. “But overall, we couldn’t keep going the way we were going… That’s why this president is doing such a good job.”
