Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) was left with egg on his face during a Senate hearing on Tuesday after attempting to accuse former Special Counsel Jack Smith of perjury.

During the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Schmitt held up a poster board containing what he claimed were text messages from Smith’s staff stating that the special counsel was attending an Atlanta Hawks NBA game and colluded with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to investigate Donald Trump and his allies.

But Schmitt ended up exposing himself as someone who knows nothing about sports.

“Did you go to an NBA game between the Golden State Warriors and the Atlanta Hawks on February 3rd, 2024?” Schmitt asked Smith.

“What city would that be?” Smith asked.

“Atlanta,” Schmitt replied.

“No,” Smith said.

“Let me just give you a little context. The day before Fani Willis came clean about her affair with the prosecutor — you know, the Atlanta prosecutor that was also trying to get Trump — the next day, were you in Atlanta?” Schmitt said.

“I do not believe so,” Smith said, adding that he didn’t believe he was in Atlanta at any point while he was special counsel.

The Republican senator then introduced a series of text messages from a staffer of Smith’s as his big gotcha moment.

“I’ll give you a second to process it so you don’t, you know, perjure yourself,” Schmitt told Smith.

The senator went on to accuse Smith of “being the villain. You’ve done so much damage as a former prosecutor; I can say there’s so much damage to the trust and faith people have in our system — you have weaponized the Department of Justice against political enemies to an extent that has never happened in the history of this country. You will go down as a total dirtbag.”

But Schmitt’s attack backfired. It turns out Smith was attending a basketball game that day. But it was the Iowa Hawkeyes, not the Hawks. And it was in Maryland.

Schmitt was corrected by Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar (MN).

“Perhaps you should have looked at it more carefully,” Klobuchar told Schmitt.

“Whose questioning is this, by the way?” Schmitt yelled out. “Are we just having an open session here? Well, I’m glad you’re trying to rehabilitate the witness.”

“I think that people should have their facts straight before they accuse someone of being a dirtbag,” Klobuchar said. “You have your teams wrong, sir.”
