Republican wins special election to complete McCarthy's term.

California Assemblymember Vince Fong won a special election Tuesday to complete the remainder of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) term in the House.

Fong defeated Sheriff Mike Boudreaux (R) in the solidly red district in the runoff election Tuesday after no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in March.

McCarthy announced his departure from Congress last year after he was booted from the speakership. He endorsed Fong in the race to succeed him.

Fong and Boudreaux will face each other again in November to serve a full term in the House.
