Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) released a new ad on Friday, in the last days leading up to the midterm elections, claiming that he is God’s gift to humankind.
The ad appears to be a continuation of the biblical story of creation in which God created the universe in six days and rested on the seventh. On the eighth day, the ad claims God decided to make DeSantis to “protect” his creation.
“On the eighth day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, ‘I need a protector,’”the narrator said. “So, God made a fighter. God said, ‘I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, kiss his family goodbye, travel thousands of miles for no other reason than to serve the people, to save their jobs, their livelihoods, their liberty, their happiness.'”
Throughout the ad DeSantis is shown as God’s answer to needing someone “to be strong, advocate truth in the midst of hysteria, someone who challenges conventional wisdom and isn’t afraid to defend what he knows to be right and just.”
“God said, ‘I need somebody who will take the arrows, stand firm in the wake of unrelenting attacks, look a mother in the eyes and tell her that her child will be in school. She can keep her job, go to church, eat dinner with friends and hold the hand of an aging parent taking their breath for the last time,'” the narrator said
The ad was shared to Twitter Friday morning by DeSantis’ wife Casey, who wrote: “I love you, Ron. On behalf of millions of people, never stop fighting for freedom.”
DeSantis is running for re-election against Democrat Charlie Crist.
Some social media users noted that several of DeSantis’ policies, like those targeting the members of the LGBTQ community do not follow Jesus’ teachings to love your neighbor as yourself. Others pointed out that DeSantis only fights for the freedom of straight white men.
