Republican Sen. Ron Johnson (Wis.) claims Democrats are to be blamed for weakening Ukraine by impeaching former President Donald Trump who refused to send military aid to the country unless they provided dirt on his then opponent, Joe Biden.
“I do not think Vladimir Putin would have moved on Ukraine were not for the weakness displayed certainly by the Biden administration, but also by the west in general,” Johnson told Fox News. “I’m certainly hoping that Col. Vindman, Adam Schiff, Nancy Pelosi who used Ukraine as a pawn in their impeachment travesty, are also recognized and reflecting they weakened Ukraine, weakened the west, weakened America by the divisive politics that they play.”
“There’s much blame to go around,” Johnson continued. “But in terms of the atrocities, that falls squarely on the shoulders of Vladimir Putin and his cronies.”
Trump was impeached for withholding nearly $400 million in congressionally approved military aid from Ukraine in 2019 and pressuring the country’s new president, Volodymyr Zelensky to announce investigations of then frontrunner in the democratic primary, Joe Biden and his son Hunter, who had served on the board of a Ukraine gas company.
