Roy Cooper expected to launch Senate bid next week.

Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) plans to enter the race for United States senate next week, according to CNN.

Cooper is Democrats top Senate recruit in North Carolina which is one of the party’s target to flip a Republican seat in next year’s midterms.

Cooper is widely popular in the state and has never lost a race over more than 30 years in state politics, CNN noted.

Republicans are still searching for a candidate after incumbent Sen. Thom Tillis announced he will not be seeking re-election for a third term after he was attacked by Donald Trump for not supporting his massive signature domestic policy bill.

Lara Trump, Trump’s daughter-in-law, and Republican National Committee Chair Michael Whatley, are considering seeking the Republican nomination.
