Ukrainian officials claimed to have intercepted a call in which a Russian soldier was telling his wife that Putin’s troops bombed a Russian town on the border and later blamed the Ukrainians.
Ukraine’s Security Service released an audio clip of the call on Friday, in which a man’s voice can be heard saying Putin’s forces attacked Klimovo, a Russian town on the border with Ukraine. Seven people were wounded as a result of the attack.
After the woman expressed concerned about the attack, the soldier responds: “That was ours fucking stuff up. It’s necessary. They do that to provoke the [Ukrainians]. And that’s why they hit it. We talked to the bosses and they said that’s how it is. The same shit was happening in the Chechen War, they blew up apartments in Moscow, as if it were terrorists. It was really the FSB.”
Klimovo authorities have blamed Ukrainian soldiers for shelling the city, an accusation Kyiv has denied.
Ukrainian intelligence said in a Facebook post that the call between the soldier and wife makes it “obvious that the Kremlin is indifferent not only to its military, but also to civilian Russians, who also suffered from the shelling of Russian troops.”
