Russian are shocked to learn that their military is disorganized and inept, according to the former UK ambassador to Russia.
Sir Andrew Wood, who served as UK’s ambassador to Russia from 1995 to 2000, told Sky News on Tuesday that the Russian people “had great trust in their armed forces, greater trust in them than the government in general. And this is such a terrible shock for them.”
“It has been a shock for the Russians to reveal themselves as being so inept militarily,” he added.
Russians believed that their military would have taken control of Ukraine by now and would be ruling it. That is yet to happen more than a month after the invasion began.
“It is also a complete contrast to what they not only expected, but relied on, it wasn’t just the speed of their victory, they supposed, but also that it would be possible thereafter for them, in effect, to rule Ukraine,” he added.
Russia’s invasion is now in its second month and it has failed on the key fronts. Russian forces were not able to enter the capital city of Kyiv, to dismantle the government. In fact, Russia announced last week it would scale back operations around Kyiv and the northern city of Chernihiv. They’ve also failed to take any major city in the 40 days since the invasion began.
