Martha-Ann Alito, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, told the Washington Post that an inverted American flag that was on display at their home in 2021 was an “international signal of distress.”
Last week, the New York Times reported that the upside-down flag was flown at Justice Alito’s home in Alexandria, Virginia on January 17, 2021, 11 days after supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s victory.
The inverted flag is a symbol for the ‘Stop the Steal’ movement which questioned the legitimacy of President Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election.
Alito admitted that the inverted flag was flown outside his home, but said he “had no involvement whatsoever in the flying of the flag” and it was his wife who briefly displayed the upside-down flag “in response to a neighbor’s use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs.”
The Washington Post reported Saturday that they received a tip about the flag in 2021 and went to the Alitos property to investigate on the day of Biden’s inauguration, which Alito did not attend.
Mrs Alito reportedly told the post reporter to “get off my property” when he inquired about the flag and yelled, “it’s an international signal of distress!”
The Post revealed that they did not report on the flag at the time because it appeared to stem from a neighborly dispute which had nothing to do with politics.
