Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) told President Joe Biden that it would be best for him to drop out of the 2024 presidential race against Donald Trump, ABC News reported.
At a private meeting on Saturday, “Schumer forcefully made the case that it would be better for Biden, better for the Democratic Party, and better for the country if he were to bow out,” ABC News’ Jonathan Karl reported Wednesday from the Republican National Convention.
Schumer’s office reportedly told Karl that “Leader Schumer conveyed the views of his caucus.”
Other prominent Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), have made similar comments to President Biden, according to Karl.
President Biden has been facing growing calls to step down after his disastrous debate performance last month that failed to quiet concerns about this age and ability of serve another four years if he is re-elected.
The report of Schumer “forcefully” telling Biden to drop out, follow Rep. Adam Schiff’s (D-Calif) call for Biden to drop his re-election bid.
“A second [Donald] Trump presidency will undermine the very foundation of our democracy, and I have serious concerns about whether the president can defeat Donald Trump in November,” Schiff, a candidate for the US Senate, told the Los Angeles Times.
