Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) slammed House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Sunday, calling him a “liar and a traitor” after leaked audio shows that he privately blamed Donald Trump for the Jan. 6 insurrection and supported his resignation.
“Kevin McCarthy is a liar and a traitor. This is outrageous. And that is really the illness that pervades the Republican leadership right now, that they say one thing to the American public and something else in private,” Warren told CNN.
“They understand that it is wrong what happened, an attempt to overthrow our government. And that the Republicans instead want to continue to try to figure out how to make 2020 election different instead of spending their energy on how it is that we go forward in order to build an economy, in order to make this country work better for the people who sent us to Washington. Shame on Kevin McCarthy,” she added.
Last week, The New York Times reported that McCarthy said he thought Trump should resign during a call with House GOP leadership colleagues on Jan. 10, 2021.
McCarthy pushed back calling the report “totally false.” Hours later the reporters played an audio of the recording of McCarthy saying exactly what he denied.
Though some GOP lawmakers slammed McCarthy for the call, the minority leader said on Friday that his relationship with Trump remains intact.
