Sen. Tommy Tuberville says 'communist' Russia invaded Ukraine because 'they need more farmland'

Republican senator Tommy Tuberville (Ala.) claims Vladimir Putin, the president of “communist” Russia invaded Ukraine to acquire more land to feed his people.

Tuberville made the comments while speaking to the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce, according to 1819News.com.

“He can’t feed his people,” Tuberville said of Putin. “It’s a communist country, so he can’t feed his people, so they need more farmland.”

Russia has not been a communist country since the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991. There is also no evidence to suggest that Putin is invading Ukraine for more farmland. In fact, the Russian president justified the invasion by claiming he was seeking to prevent a genocide against Russian-speakers and vowed a “demilitarization and de-Nazification of Ukraine.”

Tuberville also told the group that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, personally told him they don’t require boots on the ground, just weapons and supplies.

Tuberville, a former Auburn University football coach was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2020 after defeating Democrat Doug Jones. He currently serves on the Senate Committee on Armed Services, which has purview over the US military.
