A Republican state lawmaker in South Carolina has been charged with distributing child sex abuse materials.
Prosecutors say Rep. RJ May, a three-term Republican in the state House of Representatives, used several online names including “joebidennnn69” to exchange files on the Kik social media network, according to the Associated Press.
May was arrested Wednesday and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday where more details about the charges will be made available.
May was elected in 2020 and is the co-founder of the Freedom Caucus. The group said in a statement that he was removed from the caucus following his arrest and called for his resignation from the House.
