A CBS poll released this weekend shows contradictory stances among voters on Donald Trump’s tariffs and his plan to lower prices.
The stunning paradox was first flagged by Washington Monthly politics editor Bill Scher.
In the poll, 79 percent of respondents say Trump’s top priority in office should be developing policies and plans aimed at lowering the price of goods and services.
But, 52 percent of respondents say they support the U.S. placing new tariffs on goods imported from other countries, while 48 percent oppose.
In another stunning admission, 59 percent of respondents say they believe new tariffs would make the price of goods go up, and just 18 percent say tariffs will lower cost.
Washington Monthly editor Bill Scher shared the poll results on X, writing simply: “Good luck America.”
New tariffs could cause an increase in prices for a range of consumer goods, including more than 3% on groceries, according to an analysis from think tank, Third Way.
“Prices are absolutely going to rise, because the added costs from increased tariffs will be paid by the consumer,” Gabe Horwitz, senior vice president for the economic program at Third Way, told CBS. “And those price increases are going to be a lot harder for folks lower down on the income scale.”
