As tributes pour in from both sides of the aisle on Sunday after the death of former President Jimmy Carter, one stood out for the wrong reason.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) mistakenly sent his deepest condolences to late First Lady Rosalynn Carter after the former president’s death.
In a statement, Abbott said Americans owe “President Carter our enduring gratitude for his service as the 39th President of the United States.”
Abbott went on to extend his condolences to Carter’s late wife Rosalynn Carter, who passed away over a year earlier, on November 19, 2023, at 96. The couple had been married for 77 years.
“Cecilia and I send our prayers and deepest condolences to First Lady Rosalynn Carter and the entire Carter family,” Abbott added.
The Texas governor apparently realized his mistake and updated his statement to extend condolences “to the entire Carter family.”Â
