Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) who infamously said grandparents are willing to die from COVID-19 to save the economy for their grandkids has tested for the virus.
Patrick, who is fully vaccinated, will quarantine at home after testing positive for COVID last week. He has subsequently tested negative for the virus and plans to return to his regular schedule by the end of the week.
“His symptoms were mild and no one else in the household was infected. He continues working from home and will return to a public schedule by the end of the week,” Allen Blakemore, Patrick Campaign Senior Advisor said on Monday, the Texas Tribune reports.
Patrick’s office did not say where or when he is believed to have contracted the virus or why the news of his illness wasn’t shared before Monday.
Patrick staunchly oppose measures to mitigate the spread of the virus including lockdowns. During the height of the pandemic in March 2020, Patrick, who is a grandparent himself, said elderly Americans are willing to sacrifice themselves to keep the economy going.
“As a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren? And if that’s the exchange, I’m all in,” Patrick said during a FOX News interview.
The lieutenant governor also face harsh criticism for blaming unvaccinated Black people for Texas COVID-19 crisis also on Fox News.
