A substitute teacher in Texas encouraged Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to raid his high school.
In a post on social media responding to an update from ICE on their immigration operations, Jason Buchanan suggested that ICE target Northside High School in Fort Worth because many of its students “don’t even speak English.”
“Y’all should come to Fort Worth, TX to Northside High School,” he wrote. “I have many students who don’t even speak English, and they are in 10th-11th grade. They have to communicate through their iPhone translator with me. The @USEDGOV should totally overhaul our school system in Texas.”
Buchanan’s post comes as the Trump administration is ramping up deportation efforts and has revoked longstanding protections barring immigration raids on schools, hospitals, churches and other protected areas.
Northside High School has a large Hispanic population with over one-third of its student learning English as a second language.
Fort Worth Independent School District (ISD) is investigating and Buchanan was removed from campus.
“We are aware of a recent social media post referencing North Side High School which was allegedly made by a substitute teacher and has caused concern among our Fort Worth ISD community,” the district said in a statement. “We take this matter very seriously and are conducting a thorough investigation to understand the circumstances and ensure appropriate actions are taken.”
“As per district protocol, the employee will not be on campus during the investigation,” the statement reads. “We are committed to maintaining a positive and supportive environment for all students. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we address this matter.”
