A bipartisan effort to expel embattled lawmaker Rep. George Santos (R-NY) from Congress failed on Wednesday.

The first term Republican lawmaker is accused of lying about his personal, professional and religious background while running for Congress and has been indicted on multiple federal criminal charges.

The House voted 179-213-19 Wednesday on a resolution to expel Santos falling short of the two-thirds majority needed.

179 lawmakers, including 24 Republicans, voted in favor of Santos’ expulsion and 19 voted present.
