A petition calling for donations to be halted to official Democratic groups until Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) steps down as senate minority leader has received over 18,000 signatures.
Schumer infuriated fellow Democrats, including some longtime allies, after he announced his decision to vote to advance a government funding bill written entirely by Republicans. The bill empowers Donald Trump and Elon Musk to continue their raid of the federal government.
Schumer’s vote has raised questions about his effectiveness as a leader in this moment and now several Democrats want him gone.
This week, a petition launched by Democratic operative Charlotte Clymer demanding that Schumer step aside or Democrats will no longer donate to the party’s fundraising committees received over 18,000 signatures by Saturday evening.
“With his vote to approve Trump’s federal budget continuing resolution, Mr. Schumer has decidedly abdicated his critical responsibilities to the American people in a moment of compounding crises for our nation and the world,” Clymer wrote.
“Until Senate Democrats force Mr. Schumer to step down as Minority Leader, we will not give a dime to any Senate Democrat, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the Democratic National Committee, or any other organization or committee that financially supports any Senate Democrat,” Clymer said, adding “enough is enough. We need new leadership to meet this grave moment, and we need it now.”
