Republican presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) addressed his relationship status at an evangelical forum in Iowa on Saturday, telling attendees that he is dating a “lovely Christian girl.”
“So other than your mama, is there any special lady in your life?” Republican Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird asked Scott at the Faith and Freedom Coalition in Des Moines, according to Politico.
“Yes,” Scott responded. “I’m dating a lovely Christian girl.”
“One of the things I love about the gospel of Jesus Christ is it points us always in the right direction. Proverbs 18:22 says, ‘He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord,’” he added.
Scott,57, is the only Republican presidential candidate who is not married and his current relationship status is….unclear. Though he claims to be in a relationship, his campaign manager and close friend, Jennifer DeCasper was the only person willing to corroborate that claim. DeCasper told the Washington Post that she has “personally hung out with her at the zoo.”
Yet, Scott insists that the mystery surrounding his relationship status is an attempt by other campaigns to “sow seeds of doubt” about his presidential bid.
“It’s like a different form of discrimination or bias,” Scott said. “You can’t say I’m Black, because that would be terrible, so find something else that you can attack.”
