Donald Trump confirmed on Wednesday that he ordered Secret Service agents to take him to the Capitol on Jan. 6 during a rambling speech at a rally.
Trump made the comments at a rally in Waukesha, Wisconsin while criticizing the testimony of Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to ex-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows who served as a key witness in the House Jan. 6 Committee investigation.
“Remember the person that said I attacked a Secret Service agent in the front of the car? It’s not my deal. I’m a lover, not a fighter,” Trump said.
Hutchinson told the committee that someone had told her that Trump “lunged” for the steering wheel inside an armored SUV to direct it towards the Capitol when he learned that agents were not taking him to the Capitol where his supporters were gathering.
“This is crazy stuff,” Trump told his supporters. “I sat in the back and you know what I did say? I said, ‘I’d like to go down there because I see a lot of people walking down.’ They said, ‘Sir, it’s better if you don’t.’ I said, ‘Well, I’d like to […] Whatever you guys think.'”
“That was the whole tone of the conversation,” Trump added.
