Donald Trump has been uncharacteristically quiet about his supporters heading back to DC to rally for the suspects charged in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Turns out there’s a reason for that.
Sources close to the former president told the New York Times that he fears the rally is a setup that will be used against him by the press “regardless of the outcome.” Even though he has defended the mob in the past, Trump will be staying far away from Saturday’s rally and will be attending a golf tournament at his Bedminster, N.J., club before heading back to Mar-a-Lago.
The ‘Justice for J6’ rally is organized by ‘Look Ahead America’ a group founded by former Trump campaign staffer Matt Braynard.
More than 700 people are expected to be in attendance at the protest. In preparation for the rally, Capitol Police issued an emergency declaration to deputize outside law enforcement to serve as “special” Capitol Police officers during the demonstration, according to the Hill. The Capitol Police have also asked the Pentagon for National Guard troops to help with security if needed.
Late Wednesday night workers also started rebuilding the fence around the Capitol in preparation for the rally.
