Donald Trump is trying to deflect blame off himself and onto Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), claiming in a post on his Truth Social app on Sunday that the Senate Minority Leader “blew the midterms.”
“It’s Mitch McConnell’s fault. Spending money to defeat great Republican candidates instead of backing Blake Masters and others was a big mistake. Giving 4 Trillion Dollars to the Radical Left for the Green New Deal, not Infrastructure, was an even bigger mistake,” Trump wrote.
“He blew the Midterms, and everyone despises him and his otherwise lovely wife, Coco Chow!” Trump added with a racist attack on McConnell’s wife.
Trump’s attack on McConnell comes as some Republicans and conservative news outlets have been pointing the finger at the former president for the Republican Party’s underwhelming performance in Tuesday’s midterms.
With a Democratic president with low approval ratings in the Oval Office and record high inflation, Republicans were expecting to easily recapture the House and flip a few seats in the Senate. However, the ‘red wave’ failed to materialize due, in part, to candidates backed by Trump losing in key swing states.
Democrats held on to their majority in the Senate and is looking to expand with the Georgia runoff next month. It is still not clear which party will control the House, though Republicans are favored. If Republicans win control of the House, they will have a very small majority, falling well short of expectations heading into last Tuesday’s midterms.
