Trump calls for primary challenge against Texas GOP lawmaker Chip Roy.

Trump calls for primarying Chip Roy over Ron DeSantis support.

Donald Trump called for a primary challenge against Rep. Chip Roy on Monday.

“Has any smart and energetic Republican in the Great State of Texas decided to run in the Primary against RINO Congressman Chip Roy. For the right person, he is very beatable. If interested, let me know!!!,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

Roy responded to Trump’s threats by posting messages of supporting from other Republican allies, according to The Hill.

“I stand with @chiproytx,” Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) wrote on Twitter. “He fights for what he believes and he’s one of the most conservative members of Congress. I can tell you with certainty that this shortsighted effort to intimidate Chip will not work.”

There’s also one major obstacle to Trump’s threat of primarying Roy– the filing deadline for a candidate to get on the ballot has passed and there is no other Republican on the ballot.

Tensions between Trump and Roy aren’t new. The congressman voted against overturning the 2020 presidential election and has called Trump’s actions on Jan. 6 “impeachable” but said he would not vote to impeach Trump because he cannot “support the articles as written.”

Roy has also endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the 2024 GOP presidential primary.
