Donald Trump attacked Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and his ‘crazy wife’ after the senate minority leader complained about the quality of GOP candidates in senate races across the country being a hindrance to Republicans flipping the upper chamber in the midterms.
In a post on his Truth Social app, Trump said McConnell should spend more time and money helping Republican Senate candidates get elected and “less time helping his crazy wife and family get rich on China.”
“Why do Republicans Senators allow a broken down hack politician, Mitch McConnell, to openly disparage hard working Republican candidates for the United States Senate,” Trump added.
Last week, McConnell predicted that Republicans have a better chance of flipping the House than the Senate, citing candidate quality in some key swing states.
“I think there’s probably a greater likelihood the House flips than the Senate. Senate races are just different — they’re statewide, candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome,” McConnell said on Thursday, according to NBC News. “Right now, we have a 50-50 Senate and a 50-50 country, but I think when all is said and done this fall, we’re likely to have an extremely close Senate, either our side up slightly or their side up slightly.”
Polling has shown that Trump-backed candidates who won the Republican primary are struggling against their Democratic rivals in key swing state that are crucial for Republicans if they should flip the upper chamber.
Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania, JD Vance in Ohio, Herschel Walker in Georgia and Blake Masters in Arizona are all trailing their Democratic opponents in FiveThirtyEight average of polls.
On Thursday, the non-partisan Cook Political Report switched its rating for the Pennsylvania race from “toss up” to “lean Democrat.”
