Donald Trump canceled plans to appear for an election night party at the Trump International Hotel in Washington D.C. four days before the big day, and will probably hang around the White House instead.
According to The New York Times, the Trump campaign had even distributed invitations to fundraisers inviting them to the “EPIC” event.
“November 3rd will go down in history as the night we won FOUR MORE YEARS”, the invitation read. ” It will be absolutely “EPIC” and the only thing that could make it better is having YOU there.”
It’s not clear what led to the change in plans, but The Times notes that these large gatherings could violate restrictions placed on crowd size since Washington D.C. limits gathering to under 50 people to reduce the spread of the virus. Democrats have raised questions about Trump mixing his personal business with his presidency and an event at the White House could revive those questions.
These are all legitimate concerns that a normal individual would consider, but with Donald Trump, they make absolutely no sense. Seriously, can you think of one instance in which Donald Trump canceled a campaign event because he cares about coronavirus-related restrictions in that state, especially one in a ‘Democrat run city?’. Plus, at this point Trump is a walking emoluments clause violation. He does not care that he’s benefiting from the presidency.
Trump is seeing the same polls we are and they are showing that election night might not be good for him. He canceled his party because he’s worried about how he will look if he loses to Joe Biden after spending much of his campaign telling his supporters he’s the worst presidential candidate in history.
