Donald Trump defended Gov. Kristi Noem (R-S.D) amid criticism she is receiving for killing her dog.
Noem is facing criticism over her new memoir in which she confessed to killing her 14-month-old dog Cricket for ruining a pheasant hunt and misbehaving. Noem also disclosed that a “nasty and mean” male goat that smelled “disgusting, musky and rancid” and liked to chase her children met the same fate as Cricket.
The backlash might have hurt Noem’s chances of becoming Trump’s running mate in November, but the former president came to her defense during an interview on Clay Travis and Buck Sexton podcast.
“I think she’s terrific,” Trump said. “A couple of rough stories, there’s no question about it. “And when explained, the dog story, people hear that and people from different parts of the country probably feel a bit differently, but that’s a tough story.”
“She had a bad week. We all have bad weeks,” he added.
Trump also suggested that a ghostwriter might have slipped the story into the book without Noem’s knowledge.
“Until this week, she was doing incredibly well. And she got hit hard, and sometimes you do books, and you have some guy writing a book and you maybe don’t read it as carefully, you know,” Trump said. “You have ghostwriters too. They help you, and they, in this case, didn’t help too much.”
But, Trump’s theory is very unlikely though given that Noem has doubled down on the story and even suggested that President Joe Biden’s dog Commander, should also be put down following reports that he bit Secret Service agents.
