Donald Trump on Thursday claimed Roe v Wade gave women the right to commit infanticide.
Trump made the comment in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity during a discussion about Republican loses in the 2022 midterms due to abortion and whether the Alabama IVF ruling will backfire on Republicans in 2024.
Trump told Hannity that Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) contacted him saying people were “so upset” about the Alabama Supreme court ruling that frozen embryo created through IVF are considered to be “babies.”
“We want people to help, we are on the side of women,” Trump said then proceeded to falsely claim Roe gave women to the right to kill babies.
“The abortion issue, now, I’m for the exceptions like Ronald Reagan was for the exceptions,” Trump said. “I think it’s a very important thing the exceptions. I also think that they are the radicals, because they will kill the baby in eight months, nine months. Under Roe v. Wade, they had the right to kill the baby after birth. I mean, literally, after birth in some cases.”
The conservative majority on the United States Supreme Court, half of which was appointed by Trump, overturned Roe v Wade–the landmark ruling that established the right to an abortion–in 2022.
Trump has bragged about his role in ending abortion rights, telling Fox News at a town hall in January: “[For] 54 years, they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it. And I’m proud to have done it.”
