Donald Trump tried to take credit for the “good parts” of the economy and disown the “bad parts” in an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday.
Pressed by host Kristen Welker on whether it is now his economy considering he has been in office for more than 100 days, Trump said “certain aspects of it are,” according to a clip highlighted by Mediaite.
“I was able to get down the costs,” he added. “But even that, it takes a while to get them down, but we got them down good. We lost five to six billion dollars a day with Biden.”
Trump’s claim that he was able to bring down costs is a lie that has been repeatedly debunked. Grocery prices had continued to increase since he took office and the jump from February to March, about 0.49%, was the biggest one-month increase since October 2022, CNN reported. His claims that Biden lost $5-6 billion a day is also false.
Asked when it becomes his economy, Trump answered, “I think the good parts are the Trump economy and the bad parts are the Biden economy because he’s done a terrible job.”
The U.S. economy shrank at a 0.3% annual pace from January through March, the first drop in three years, as Trump’s trade wars, brought on by massive tariffs he imposed on imported goods, disrupted business.
On Sunday, Trump suggested that tariffs could be permanent.
“No, I wouldn’t do that because if somebody thought they were going to come off the table, why would they build in the United States?” told said when asked if tariffs would be taken off the table.
