Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) said Donald Trump “got what he deserved” after a New York jury found the former president liable for sexual battery and defamation in writer E. Jean Carroll case.
“The jury spoke and I respect the jury,” Bacon told CNN. “I think he showed a lot of disrespect for the jury and the court”
“The way he treated them, he got what he deserved,” he added.
Bacon, a four-term Republican lawmaker representing a district President Biden won by 6 points in 2020, urged the Republican Party to move away from Trump or suffer more defeat in the future.
Trump “is too divisive and I think he would sink, he would not win the White House, he would probably cause us to lose the House and the Senate,” Bacon said. “I see very dark clouds on the horizon if he is the nominee.”
Trump called the verdict a “disgrace” and attacked the judge in the case while vowing to appeal.
“We’ll appeal. We got treated very badly by the Clinton-appointed judge,” Trump said.
