Trump loses appeal in E. Jean Carroll case.

Trump found liable for sexually abusing E. Jean Carroll and is ordered to pay $5 million

A federal appeals court panel upheld a verdict finding President-elect Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing E. Jean Carroll and ordering him to pay $5 million.

A three-judge panel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit concluded that Trump did not sufficiently show any claimed errors affected his rights or warranted a new trial, according to The Hill

“On review for abuse of discretion, we conclude that Mr. Trump has not demonstrated that the district court erred in any of the challenged rulings,” the panel wrote.

Carroll, an advice columnist, filed a civil defamation and battery case against Trump, accusing him of raping her in a Bergdorf Goodman store in the 90s and later defamed her after she went public with the allegations in her book published in 2019.

Last year, a jury found that while Trump did not commit rape, Carroll had proven “by a preponderance of the evidence” that Trump sexually abused her and awarded her $5 million in damages.

In a separate case, a jury ordered Trump to pay Carroll $83.3 million in damages for continuing to defame her. Trump is also appealing that verdict.
