Donald Trump claims that only a “psycho” would disparage fallen soldiers as “losers” and “suckers” even though a general said he did.
At a campaign rally in Las Vegas on Sunday, Trump called reports that he made the comment “disinformation.”
“Think of it from a practical standpoint, I’m standing there with generals and military people, in a cemetery and I look at them, I say, ‘These people are suckers and losers,’” Trump said. “Now, think of it, unless you’re a psycho or a crazy person or a very stupid person—who would say that anyway—but who would say it to military people?”
Trump reportedly referred to fallen soldiers at Aisne-Marne American Cemetery as “losers” and “suckers” during a visit to France in 2018 to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the end of World War I, according to The Atlantic.
No one accused Trump of making the comment at the cemetery surrounding by “military people,” because Trump never made it to the cemetery.
Then-President Trump had refused to visit the cemetery because it was raining and he did not want to get his hair wet.
“Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers,” Trump reportedly told staffers. In another conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the 1,800 Marines who died in the World War I battle of Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed.
His chief of staff at the time, John Kelly, a retired Marine Corps general, visit the cemetery instead.
Trump denied making the comment but Kelly later confirmed he did.
