Donald Trump praised Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s “GRIT” after he refused to recuse himself from Jan 6 related cases before the Supreme Court despite displaying ‘Stop the Steal’ flags at his home.
“Congratulations to United States Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito for showing the INTELLIGENCE, COURAGE, and ‘GUTS’ to refuse stepping aside from making a decision on anything January 6th related,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“All U.S. Judges, Justices, and Leaders should have such GRIT – Our Country would be far more advanced than its current status as A BADLY FAILING NATION, headed by the Worst President in American History, Crooked Joe Biden!” he added.
Trump’s post came after Alito sent two letters to House and Senate Democrats on Wednesday rejecting their calls to recuse himself from Jan. 6 cases after the New York Times reported that two ‘Stop the Steal’ flags were flown at his homes on Jan. 17, 2021 and between July a September last year.
Alito blamed his wife for flying the flags in his letters to congressional Democrats and said he will not recuse.
“A reasonable person who is not motivated by political or ideological considerations or a desire to affect the outcome of Supreme Court cases would conclude that this event does not meet the applicable standard for recusal,” Alito wrote. “I am therefore duty-bound to reject your recusal request.”
Democrats have been arguing that the flags indicate that Alito is not impartial and called on him to recuse himself from cases related to the 2020 election and Jan. 6. Such cases include whether Trump’s has absolute immunity from prosecution in special counsel Jack Smith’s election subversion case and a Jan. 6 case that challenges an obstruction law used to prosecute hundreds of rioters, including members of the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys
