Donald Trump heaped fawning praises on Democratic senator John Fetterman (Pa.) after their recent meeting at Mar-a-Lago.
“It was a totally fascinating meeting. He’s a fascinating man, and his wife is lovely. They were both up, and I couldn’t be more impressed,” Trump told the Washington Examiner.
“He’s a commonsense person. He’s not liberal or conservative. He’s just a commonsense person, which is beautiful,” Trump said, adding “he really was impressive, and I’m glad I got to speak to him. And he loves Pennsylvania, and he loves our country.”
Last week, Fetterman confirmed to CBS News that he accepted an invitation to meet at Trump’s Florida residence at an undisclosed upcoming date.
“That is the plan. Yes, we are going to have a conversation,” Fetterman told the outlet.
“I think that one, he’s the president, or he will be officially,” he said. “And I think it’s pretty reasonable that if the president would like to have a conversation — or invite someone to have a conversation — to have it. And no one is my gatekeeper.”
Since the election, Fetterman has signaled an openness to more willingly embrace Trump and his ideas than his Democratic colleagues. He told ABC News in an interview that anyone rooting against Trump is “rooting against the nation” and praised the “undeniable” and “singular political talent” of Trump.
Fetterman has also praised Trump’s idea to seize Greenland and is opened to supporting some of the president-elect’s most controversial nominees including Pete Hegseth, Trump’s nominee for defense secretary who is accused of sexual assault and Kash Patel, Trump’s pick to lead the FBI who has promised to use the agency to target Trump’s critics.
