On Sunday, Donald Trump retweeted a video showing his supporters confronting anti-Trump protesters in The Villages, a retirement community in Florida. In one exchange, a Trump supporter riding in his golf cart shouted ‘”white power” in response to the protesters.
In the video, a man holding a ‘Make America Sane Again’ poster yells “where is your hood?” at a Trumper driving by in his golf cart decorated with the latest Trump campaign paraphernalia. “Racist, racist,” the man standing with the sign yelled again. This time the man driving by in the golf cart yell, “white power” with his fist raised at protesters.
Trump thanked his supporters by retweeting the video on Sunday: “Thank you to the great people of The Villages. The Radical Left Do Nothing Democrats will Fall in the Fall. Corrupt Joe is shot. See you soon!!!
Trump’s tweet could not have come at a worse time. Racial tensions are high right now in the country following the murder of George Floyd and a majority of Americans disapproved of the way Trump responded to the nationwide protest that resulted from Floyd’s death. His poll numbers are in free fall and a majority of voters disapproved of his handling on race, which is bad news for him since race is a major issue in 2020, right up there with other top issues like healthcare and the economy.
Retweeting this video of one of his supporters yelling a white supremacist slogan, is bad form and shows that Trump is out of touch, failing to recognize the movement that has swept this country for the past few weeks.
